Skittering and scheming, trying to find new ways to bring plague and doom to the rest of the world, or trying to pull the strings from behind the curtain. These are the images brought to the mind of most commoners throughout the world who have never been properly introduced to the Muridae or their vast homeland of Rhoa.

Though, much of that is not unwarranted, the Muridae are a race of rodent-like humanoids that are sized between three and a half to around four feet tall, the differences between the sexes are sometimes hard to tell by those outside their race, and their large scaly rodent tail mark these folk as indeed quite different from the other humanoid races around the world. Originally native to subterranean areas in dry deserts and plains, they are now much more often found in nomadic caravans.

Once in a while, these caravans converge into massive swarms that travel the country-side. Almost like a force of nature, they often require entire armies to disperse, and they do so often without violence. Those that choose to forego their nomad lifestyle often find themselves content within the ruins or vast sewers of other societies where they form their own distinct cultures and governance right under the nose of the surface-dwellers.

It is true, that often Muridae grow contempt for those that live above them, or those that act with hostility against their caravans, and for them, they offer little in the way of mercy unless it directly affects their causes.

Much like the rodents they appear to resemble, Muridae are hoarders and packrats by nature. They seek to stow away things that they like, or may need, and as a whole they are great masters of commerce and trade. They often appreciate unique and interesting items far more than simple coins, and would rather add such items to their stockpile. It is a common sight to see Muridae nomads or travelers with bundles of unique and seemingly strange or useless trinkets piled dangerously high on the self sustained caravan wagons they call home pulled by strange beasts they find or by giant rats. Those that choose a more sedentary lifestyle under the nose of surface dwellers often lay their dens thick with the items they collect. Making it a danger for those non-ratfolks who enter to be crushed by the stockpile and debris.

Muridae Society is extremely communal and open. They live in vast warrens or camps with plenty of hidden nooks and crannies to stash their hoards or flee to in times of danger. When they see themselves living in one spot for a time, they find themselves pulled to the subterranean passageways and sewers, or as tightly packed tenants in city slums. They feel an intense bond with their large families and extended networks of kin, along with rodents of all kinds. It is common to meet a Muridae talking fondly about their tenth sister, or fourteenth cousin. They live in chaotic harmony, with vermin of all sorts and fight fiercely if they feel they are truly threatened and cannot escape without major loss. Though they are even faster in trying to barter or work out a mutual trade to settle differences all together.

If a particular Muridae home warren or local is overcrowded, they will sometimes gather their young and send them in a vast swarms lead by the richest Muridae to find a new place. When they settle, they find themselves aligned greatly to their home warren. Otherwise, individuals are likely to find their own place in the world, generally as nomadic gypsy traders, living entirely out of wagons on the outskirts of towns before moving onwards.

Though in places where ratfolk must compete with others for success, clan warfare is an inevitability that often spans generations.

Muridae are a very grateful people. They have every form of harshness and bitter scorn directed towards them, (Some say for good reason) But if you show a Muridae true kindness, they will never forget it and be eternally grateful. Even if its something as simple as a free piece of bread when they are down on their luck. They might even seek to repay you (Not in a literal sense! They like their money too much!)

All in all, Muridae tend to get along quite well with different races(even if they don't like them back!). Humans, they see as a simple force that they have to live with. Much like winter, or the sea. They develop societies in Human and Jaranor sewers and alleyways. With Dwarves, they competed in the ancient past for territory and wealth deep underground, and find dwarven people too brash and territorial for their liking. Taking mere criticisms as personal attacks. Elves they find are the most civilized and interesting of the races, and take pieces of elven art and culture and twist it in ways more suited for their ratty nature. They find Kobolds as contemporaries. Both trying to find their way in a world of surface dwelling societies.

Other races tend to see them as dirty thieving gypsies who pickpocket and connive their way to wealth, and most of what they've acquired is unearned.

Muridae have a complex form of technology and culture, especially deep in the sewers or slums of cities. They take what they can find, add onto it, and develop it in their own tinkering, strange way. Those that grow to resent the surface-dwellers had developed their advanced alchemical formulae and plaguecraft so they can truly be the horrors that the those that dwell above them fear. Those that take the more nomadic lifestyle find themselves in a very odd position. Taking culture from those they come across and changing it to suit them. They value their wagons, which are actually quite advanced works of engineering, as their whole world.

As for clothing, Muridae choose to dress simply, but with dashes of color or designs that warrant it. Along with showing off various bobbles or trinkets they find most favorable, they wear jewelry such as necklaces, chains, anklets, wristwear, and piercings often. Purples, reds, whites, and darker colors are often part of their outfits.
